About Melody Sher

Melody Sher was born and raised in Taiwan where she received early training in piano and cello. She participated in chamber ensembles, symphony orchestras, and traditional Chinese orchestras which performed and competed regularly. After she relocated to California, she began to focus on piano and attended several piano competitions. While she did not major in music in her undergraduate studies, she continued to play piano and eventually returned to graduate school for further training.

Melody won first prize in the U.S. Open Piano Competition in 1999. Upon receiving a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Houston, she came to study at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary School of Church Music in Fort Worth where she was awarded with several piano scholarships including Wayne (Polly) McNeely Piano Award. In May 2010, she received a Master of Music in Piano Performance and made her debut concerto performance with the Fort Worth Civic Orchestra. She has performed works by Bach, Beethoven, Schumann, Gershwin, Ravel, Bartok and Rachmaninoff in recitals.

Melody has years of experience in accompanying vocalists, instrumentalists, ensembles, and worship services. She also has over twenty years of experience in private teaching with younger children as well as older children and adults, from beginner to early advance levels. Her strength is in teaching classical repertoire while incorporating contemporary and jazz elements in lessons. In the end, she wants to expand the student’s taste in different musical styles and to simply enjoy making music!
